The Family Book is for parents and caregivers of children who are deaf or hearing impaired. The purpose of this book is to give parents a sense of confidence, empowerment and hope by providing key information to help them better understand their child’s impairment and potential.
The Family Book combines practical information about the mechanics of hearing, deaf culture, the technology available to help their child, tips and techniques they can use to help their child learn and the services and support available in relation to health and education. The Family Book also includes a series of stories about the experiences of other families, both good and difficult.
Foundry created a vibrant and positive visual style for the publication and organised photography to help bring the family stories to life. We attended Deaf Aotearoa events to gain a better understanding of deaf culture and captured the people, community and positive interactions through photography. We also illustrated common sign language gestures and designed diagrams to help explain technical information about hearing loss. The result is a positive and engaging publication which has already helped many families cope with the challenges facing their child with a hearing loss.
